The Service Design
The service design depends on the use of the family home as a base which can be accessed during the daytime. This is essential for those who require a high level of personal care when adequate community facilities, such as Changing Places toilets, are extremely limited. It is also used for those who need to rest from a seizure or just take some ‘time out’. The personal commitment of families to use their family homes in this way is essential for the success of this type of support service. This commitment has not been diminished by the inevitable niggles and difficulties that have arisen from time to time as a result of this arrangement.
The above arrangement is not a necessity for all of the people who require support and this can be discussed on an individual basis with the management team to ensure that people’s need are best met.
- Families and support workers need to establish good working relationships where problems and issues can be discussed openly. The organisation has clear policies and procedures for dealing with problems and line managing issues.
- The service requires to be responsive to changing needs and a framework is in place to analyse what is and what is not working from the different perspectives of all the parties involved; the person receiving support, carer, support worker and the organisation.
- Providing opportunities for individuals to spend time with people they like, and supporting these opportunities over time, is something we value as an organisation. We are learning how to see from each individual’s perspective what they want and value from relationships and connections with other people. This is an area that requires clear expectations and agreement amongst those who are important in the person’s life.
